PSHE – Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education 

(please read in conjunction with SMSC)

Intent

At Victoria Road we believe that the purpose of PSHE education is to develop in each child an understanding of their core values and how these impact the decisions they make.

We want each child to develop their self-confidence and self-esteem, making the most of their abilities, through recognising their own worth. We want to prepare to play an active role as citizens in a diverse society, working collaboratively with others, developing good relationships and respect the differences between members of the school and the wider community. We want each child to have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the life of the school. Our children need to develop a healthy, safe lifestyle with the ability to make informed decisions. A key focus in our intent is for our children to recognise the importance of their own mental health and well-being.

We expect teachers to equip pupils with an age-appropriate, sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

Design

Whilst taking account of the content outlined in the National Curriculum, and in statutory guidance (on aspects including drug education, financial education, citizenship, personal safety, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle) we ensure that the delivered curriculum must reflect the needs of our pupils. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to support many of the principles of safeguarding and links closely to schools Safeguarding, SMSC and British Values. We are all aware of the important role the PSHE curriculum has in supporting school to implement the 9 protected characteristics of The Equality Act 2010.

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught regularly and this enables staff to ensure full coverage of PSHE is taught in their year group. There are always occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class. PSHE is integral to the development of children values in order for them to become a positive citizen in a forever changing community.

We strive to provide our children with learning opportunities across and beyond the curriculum, in specific lessons, special school projects and other activities that enrich pupils’ experiences. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

 Wider Curriculum  

  • We believe that focusing on developing a 'Growth Mindset' in our children will help them to build resilience, independence and confidence; embrace challenge; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of happiness. We do this through 'Trauma Informed' language, praising children for their efforts, and using language to encourage children to change their way of thinking. This supports both our school and PSHE aims and values, and we focus on Growth Mindsets in all aspects of school life.
  • PSHE, including SMSC and BV, is an integral part of the whole school curriculum, and is therefore often taught within another subject area.
  • Visitors such as emergency services and the PCSO's complement our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning.          
  • We encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We challenge all of our pupils to look for opportunities to show the school values of Nurture, Aspire, Accomplish                                                                                                                
  • Assemblies are linked to aspiring to be a Top 2%er in all we do, PSHE, British Values and SMSC and cover any additional sessions that would benefit the whole school.                                                        

Impact

By the time our children leave our school they will:

  • be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life
  • be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society
  • appreciate difference and diversity
  • recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty
  • be  able to understand and manage their emotions
  • be able to look after their mental health and well-being
  • be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
  •  understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level
  •  have respect for themselves and others.
  •  have a positive self esteem

Next steps:

  • To implement the revised PHSCE long term plan in order to show clearer progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary across all phases.
