SMSC

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) at VRPS

(please read in conjunction with PSHE)

 INTENT

The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education of our children pervades all areas of the curriculum and school life. We aim to ensure that every child is enabled to realise their academic and personal potential through positive adult modelling and interactions.

We show through our teaching, our actions and behaviour support the difference between right and wrong, a respect for others, their opinions, belief and their rights.

In all of the work that we do, we actively promote the British Values of Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We aim that our pupils will grow up to be healthy, secure, independent, caring and responsible members of society so that they can contribute positively to it.

 IMPLEMENTATION

The SMSC curriculum is delivered though PSHE lessons, assemblies, cross-curricular activities and within aspects of our RE lessons.

We have a range of leadership roles that the children have in the children's leadership team.  These include head-boy and girl, positive behavour and mental health ambassadors, junior safety officers and house captains.  They are fully consulted on a range of aspects of school life.

The children raise money for chosen school charities as well as the school and find out about the work that they do.

Every year we have a remembrance service, where we help the children to understand the sacrifices that previous generations have made for our liberty and take time to reflect upon how to keep our world peaceful.

We actively teach the children mindfulness as one strategy to support their mental health and children relish the opportunity to stop and slow their brains in order to recharge their batteries.

 IMPACT

Each year group has an PHSE floor book to record and celebrate lessons that are related solely to PSHE, SMSC, British Values, special occasion days and school trips. These evidence a rich curriculum and breadth of study.

In addition, many successful themed assemblies, celebration days and weeks raised the awareness of SMSC and British Values in our school.
