Our Intent for our Religious Education and World Views Curriculum

Our RE curriculum is designed to develop our children’s curiosity religions and worldviews. Alongside learning key knowledge, we aim for our children to develop, skills and attitudes such as critical thinking and empathy. This understanding of others’ worldviews is an essential first step to enabling each pupil to understand, reflect on and develop their own personal worldview, which we believe is Is key to preparing our children to be good citizens.

Our Implementation for our Religion and World Views Curriculum

Our RE lessons are concept driven and we often focus on key words to develop religious literacy and equip us with the skills we need to discuss religion. In KS1 we don't use individual books to record our work as we are instead developing the skills needed to access Religious Education like debating and group work. Samples of our lessons are recorded in our class big books. In KS2 we still debate but have individual books to record our findings. We currently learn about Christianity, Judaism and Islam in Key Stage One and Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam and Judaism in Key Stage Two.  We are also introduced to Humanism as a non-religious world view with sessions in both key stages. We may also consider different religions alongside global learning and interfaith projects. RE lessons often include Philosophy for Children, circle time, critical thinking, learning from believers (email or twitter interviews, visitors, film clips) and opportunities to unpack concepts through drama, art and ICT. Our RE helps us to learn about diversity in the UK and around the world. RE is taught weekly.

The impact of our Religion and World Views Curriculum

Children are to retain prior learning and explicitly make connections between what they have previously learned and what they are currently learning.

Children demonstrate knowledge and understanding about religion in society.

Children will develop understanding about different religions, fesitvals, celebrations and world views.

Children will apply their knowledge to their everyday life in a local, national and global community whilst prepared to express their own opinions respectfully.

Children leave school at the end of key stage 2 able to make informed choices about systems of belief whether faith based or secular and celebrate diversity in soceity.

Specific skills for Religious Education will have been developed including;

KS1

• retelling religious stories
• recognising symbols
• sharing my opinions
• asking questions
• responding positively to differences and similarities 

KS2

• Making connections between words of wisdom
• can reflect on their own values and those of a believer
• can understand different ways of life and ways to express meaning
• can ask and have the skills to answer, ultimate and ethical questions from their viewpoint and that of a believer
• discuss issues and support the development of community cohesion whilst challenging prejudice 

Our ongoing skills development include Critical Thinking, Religious Tolerance, Investigation, Interpretation, Reflection, Evaluation, Analysis, Synthesis, Application, Expression, Self Understanding, Communication and Problem Solving.

Our developing attitudes in religion and world views include Self Esteem, Curiosity, Fairness, Respect, Empathy, Wonder, Open-mindedness, Working with others, Sense of Community.

Next steps 2021-2022

• To continue to develop staffs understanding of the new RE curriculum
• To continue to review the curriculum to ensure full coverage of all religions 
• Continue to work with other schools in the trust to share and adopt best practice
• To ensure ongoing skills are being developed
