PE

INTENT – PE

Our intention is that all children are taught to recognise the role that physical activity has in maintaining healthy minds and bodies and they are taught in an engaging and fun way so that they want to do more physical activities.

They will learn a range of skills which will make them more adept in a varietyof sports so that they become increasing proficient.

Every child will have the opportunity to attend after-school sports clubs and be signposted to local organisations so that they can continue progressing in their favourite sport.

They will be taught essential skills for life and we aim that all children will be able to swim at least 25 m before leaving us in year 6 and have overcome any fears of water. They will also be proficient in riding a bike safely through the bike-a-bility programme.

DESIGN/IMPLEMENTATION

Each class has one indoor PE lesson and one outdoor PE lesson when the weather is fine.  There is a focus on the fundamental movement skills in the early years. As the children advance through the school, the curriculum for games, gymnastics and dance is designed to ensure that progression is appropriate and challenging. Every child is introduced to new skills and has opportunities to practise their skills. External providers enhance the curriculum offering specialist teaching in EYFS and Upper Key Stage 2. They are also able to offer specialist support to our own teachers.

The curriculum is further enhanced in Year 2 and 6 where the curriculum is designed to allow children to access external Dance coaching for their Indian dance and end of school performance.

In addition to curriculum provision of physical education, all children complete the ‘Run to’ challenge. Every child is encouraged to run, jog or walk laps of the playingfield for 15 minutes in their class slot throughout the week.

Sport is high profile in the wider life of our school. Teams compete in a year-round calendar of inter-school sports events and intra- housecompetitions.

This year we will be developing the jobs of sports leaders throughout our school, allowing them to run lunchtime activities, help our PE lead to organisethe competitions and write up recounts of the sport afterwards.

IMPACT

We are very proud that the school was awarded the Silver Games Mark Award for 2018-19. Some of the features of our PE provision that the award recognised were:

  •  Regularly reporting PE and sporting events in the school newsletter
  •  Setting personal challenges for all year groups to access throughout the year
  • Completing regular inter-house competitions
  • Sending A, B and C teams to represent the school
  • Ensuring that opportunities were provided to less active children by inviting them to extra-curricular sessions
  • Making lessons more active and ensuring that children are receiving an extra 30 minutes of exercise throughout the day
  • Providing opportunities for the juniors to act as sports leaders at our inter-house competitions and on sports days
  • 52% of year 6 pupils achieved 25 m
