Modern Foreign Languages

At Victoria Road Primary School, we teach our children Spanish.

Intent

The intention of our MFL curriculum is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence and we strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. In planning, we actively plan links to develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries, through our protected characteristics, British values and curriculum enrichment opportunities. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their Spanish learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning.

 

Design

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children’s knowledge and skills in languages, through regular taught lessons using the Primary Language Network resources. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. All our children in KS2 will have regular language lessons.

 

Implementation

Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games using the resources and schemes of work used in the Primary Language Network. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. Practical activities, songs and games are used to help improve memory and recall, alongside instructions being given in Spanish to expose children to the language as much as possible in day to day contexts. 

 

 

Impact

Spanish is monitored by the subject leader throughout all year groups using a variety of strategies lesson observations, staff discussions and pupil interviews.  Feedback is given to teachers and leaders use the information to see if the children know more and remember more.

  • To raise attainment of students across KS2 
  • Increasing confidence in writing skills to match spoken skills in Upper KS2
  • Teachers to be supported in deepening understanding and confidence
  • Learners’ capability to communicate is extended.
  • Learners’ understanding of a language in addition to their own is developed.
  • Learners can engage with people of diverse cultures in ways that recognise differences and create connections.
  • Learners understand how languages are structured and how they work to create meaning, thereby extending language awareness.
  • Learners’ capacity to think and to use knowledge and information in interaction with others, using a range of technologies, is developed.

Learning additional languages increases the personal, social, and economic capacities of both individuals and communities. It also assists learners in shaping, engaging with, and making meaning from these new learning environments. Learners with knowledge of additional languages and cultures will be more able to shape and navigate their own environments. Knowing additional languages and cultures increases our students’ capabilities to:

  • Be open to cultures of other countries
  • Interact successfully with others
  • Respond creatively to change
  • Be aware of the world around them
