Computing Curriculum
INTENT
At Victoria Road Primary, we recognise that children are living within an increasingly technological world and aim to develop confidence and knowledge in this area. Our curriculum intent is to offer a curriculum which prepares the children to develop knowledge and skills for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world so that they can be confident and active participants in our digital world. We want our children to ensure that our children understand how the digital systems work, the principles of information and computation and how to apply these to programming. We are also aware of the risks and importance of online safety. Our curriculum enables our children to use technology safely and respectfully and to know how to seek help if they are worried by anything that they see or do on-line.
Design
Computing skills and knowledge are taught specifically during computing sessions. Skills are practised in sessions and then applied across the curriculum to enhance other subjects. Alongside computing skills and knowledge, we regularly revisit internet safety and the importance of why we need to keep ourselves safe of the internet. As children leave primary school, we aim for children to transfer this knowledge and have the confidence to implement these skills in everyday situations.
Implementation.
ICT is taught using ‘Purple mash’ as a core program for delivery. It is delivered in 30-minute teaching sessions and builds upon prior knowledge The children have opportunities throughout units of learning to further develop their understanding of ICT. In addition, we encourage staff to incorporate technology throughout the wider curriculum and use these skills to research and present writing in a variety of ways. Each class has access to SMART boards and teaching is delivered using this technology.
Impact.
Leaders gather knowledge of how the curriculum is being taught through work scrutinies on Purple Mash, lesson coaching and pupil interviews where children can articulate and demonstrate the skills they have been taught.
ACTIONS/PRIORITIES FOR 2022-2023:
To continue to embed purple mash as a core programme for the teaching of ICT.
To access coaching as required from ASPIRE Trust.
To ensure that achievement of ARE or above in ICT is consistently high across each year group.
To introduce assessment for each year group.
To ensure resources for ICT are up to date and plentiful.
